A letter from our President
Dear Sisters, Alumnae, Parents, Prospective Members, and Fellow Engineers,
Welcome to the website of the Theta Chapter of Phi Sigma Rho at the University of Connecticut! This site contains a lot of insight about our chapter so you can get to know Phi Rho better. We are all so excited for you to find out more about our organization and learn about all of the unique and wonderful experiences you can gain by joining our sisterhood.
I joined Phi Sigma Rho in the fall of my first semester at UConn, and I couldn’t be more grateful. Phi Rho has been a wonderful part of my life, and has contributed so many positive things. First and foremost, Phi Rho is my home away from home. It’s a community of sisterhood where I can be myself and I have over fifty sisters that I can go to in a time of need and know that they will be there for me. I have found my closest friends in this organization and have made genuine, lasting friendships that I know will last a lifetime. The special thing about Phi Rho is that we all have a fundamental understanding of what it’s like to go through the grueling coursework of being an engineer. My sisters understand what it is like to deal with the major and to live through it. They are a source of admiration, to see those who graduate. They are a source of companionship, to always have a sister taking your class, to always have a study buddy, and to always have someone to take a study break with. They are driven girls who value academics, friendship, and giving to the community. Phi Rho has helped me in every aspect of my life. It has pushed me to go out of my comfort zone and get involved; it has helped me strive to do better in my studies; and it has helped shape who I am today, all the while helping me balance a social life and coursework.
Looking back, Phi Rho has only benefited me positively; however, my joining Phi Rho is a unique story. I wish I could say that I always wanted to join a sorority, or even a club for engineers. But that wasn’t me. I was skeptical about sororities and didn’t really understand what they were about. As a freshman, I was constantly trying to push myself out of my comfort zone and to try new things, to fully get the “college experience”. So, when my friend asked me to go to an engineering sorority information night with her, my first instinct was to say no. But, I pushed myself out of my comfort zone. The moment I got there, I was surrounded by friendly faces who I could tell genuinely wanted to get to know me. I was still skeptical, but by the end of the night, Phi Rho had won me over. In just an hour, I could see how authentic the friendships between the sisters were. I wanted to be a part of something so special, a part of a values-based sisterhood that had a unique bond and understanding about engineering. I invite you to learn about this organization that can teach you how to manage both a social life and school work.
Now I welcome you to take some time to explore our website. You’ll find out more about our sisters, our involvement in Greek Life, philanthropy, service, and our recruitment events. Every semester we hold recruitment events and would love to see you at one of our events! Whenever you meet a sister of Phi Sigma Rho, feel free to ask her about her experiences; she would love to share them with you!
Best Wishes,
